Discover Famagusta & The Ghost Town – A Journey Through History and Beauty
Join us on an unforgettable excursion to Famagusta, one of Cyprus’ most captivating coastal towns. From ancient ruins and Venetian fortresses to the haunting beauty of Varosha, the “Ghost Town”, this trip offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and breathtaking seaside landscapes.
Our first stop is the Monastery of Saint Barnabas, dedicated to the founder of the Cypriot Orthodox Church. Here, you can explore the Icon Museum and visit the tomb of Saint Barnabas, who was martyred in the area in 52 AD.
Next, we travel back in time to the ancient city-kingdom of Salamis, founded around 1100 BC. This archaeological wonder features a stunning Greek theatre, Roman baths, and grand marble columns. A guided tour will immerse you in its fascinating past.
We then continue to the Old Town of Famagusta, where you’ll have free time for lunch (optional) and sightseeing. Walk along the Venetian Walls, visit the Gothic Church of Saint Nicolas, or step inside Othello Castle, a fortress famously linked to Shakespeare’s play, Othello (optional).
The journey’s highlight is Varosha Beach, known as the “Ghost Town”. Once a thriving tourist hotspot, this area has remained frozen in time since the Turkish invasion of 1974. You will have the rare opportunity to explore part of the abandoned city and swim in its crystal-clear waters, all while witnessing the striking contrast between natural beauty and history’s remnants.
On our way back, we drive past the sealed-off section of Varosha, offering a glimpse into what was once one of the Mediterranean’s most glamorous destinations.
